In light of the war in Ukraine, we held a dinner and an immersive discussion by Professor Valerie Morkevičius on the Just War Theory, and the ethics of war in general, on Friday, May 20th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Great Hall. Valerie Morkevičius is an expert on the Just War Theory, and associate professor of political science at Colgate University in Hamilton, New York. Her work focuses on the intersection between strategy and ethics, and the applicability of traditional just war thinking to contemporary challenges. She is the author of Realist Ethics: Just War Traditions as Power Politics (Cambridge University Press, 2018).
Her most recent research explores the ethical implications of disinformation and artificial intelligence. A University of Chicago Ph.D. graduate, Valerie was a research fellow at the U.S. Naval Academy’s Stockdale Center for Ethical Leadership during the 2010 academic year. She has given talks on the ethics of war around the world, including at military service academies in Australia and the United States.
